Five people have died following a fatal road accident involving two vehicles on the Saulos Chilima Highway in Lilongwe on Sunday night.
Central West Police spokesperson Foster Benjamin has confirmed the incident, saying the crash occurred near the Lilongwe Wildlife Sanctuary.
According to Benjamin, a Ford Ranger vehicle belonging to the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), registration number MG 134 AR, was being driven by Wycliffe Liyati from the Capital Hill direction towards the Kamuzu Central Hospital interchange. At the same time, an X-Trailer vehicle driven by 40-year-old Gerrard Gwangwaya, a Zimbabwean national, was travelling from the opposite direction towards Kamuzu Institute.
“When the two vehicles reached a bend near the Wildlife Sanctuary, they collided head-on,” said Benjamin.
He explained that four people including the X-Trailer driver Gerrard Gwangwaya, two women and a child who were passengers in the same vehicle died on the spot. A four-year-old child identified as Lloyn Kamatenda, who was in the Ford Ranger, also died as a result of the crash.
One other person sustained injuries and has been admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.
Police have since urged motorists to strictly observe road traffic regulations in order to prevent similar accidents.
