Police in Nkhata Bay District have arrested a 31-year-old man, Matias Soko, who works as a hospital attendant, for allegedly stealing an Exide N35 battery belonging to a generator used at the district hospital.
Deputy public relations officer for Nkhata Bay Police, Devoter Mithi, said the incident occurred on 5 December this year when police officers had gone to the hospital to attend to a road accident victim.
“While driving towards the Emergency Department, officers spotted a man walking along the hospital premises carrying an object. Upon noticing the police vehicle, the suspect attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended,” said Mithi.
Mithi added that when questioned about the battery, the suspect claimed he had been sent by another person.
The suspect hails from Chiyachang’ombe Village, under Traditional Authority Timbiri in Nkhata Bay District, and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
