Former Trade Minister and MCP MP Vitumbiko Mumba is not holding back. A day after being granted bail on 15 December following his arrest over alleged false news, Mumba took to Facebook to call out the DPP government.

Mumba accused the administration of being “still finding its feet” and running a budget that claims austerity but is packed with “a lot of freebies,” a move he says shows the government lacks economic direction and risks losing donor confidence.

He also highlighted the mismatch between the DPP’s proclaimed welfare government and the reality of its austerity policies, saying the leadership is “confused” and failing to provide clear direction.

Despite the bold critique, Mumba said he remains on his 90-day political hiatus, warning that any comments from him or President Chakwera might be misread as sour grapes.

He closed his post with a stark warning: “When a lion is resting, never you try to wake him,” signaling that his scrutiny of the current government is far from over.

The DPP has not yet responded to Mumba’s criticisms.

Mumba was arrested on 12 December at his house in Lilongwe Area 49 sector 1 and he is answering a charge of Publication of false news likely to cause alarm to the public.
