Blantyre City Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman has announced that the 21-day grace period given to traders to settle outstanding debts with the city council has ended, and those who failed to comply are now having their shops closed.
Mayor Osman confirmed that even businesses operating liquor outlets without proper permits are among those affected. He commended traders who were able to clear their debts, noting that the funds contribute significantly to the development of city markets and streets.
“We have ensured that those who did not settle their obligations are publicly exposed in newspapers and other media so that the public is aware,” said Osman.
Dr. George Chaima, a city spokesperson, reminded traders of their responsibility to pay taxes on time and not wait to be reminded by the council, emphasizing the importance of compliance for the smooth running of Blantyre’s economy.
