The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Mchinji has convicted 28-year-old Geoffrey Lazarus and fined him K2 million for illegally importing and possessing expired pesticides.
State prosecutor Nason Lengani of Mchinji Police Station told the court that Lazarus was arrested on December 9, 2025, after police found him in possession of expired Falprid pesticides at Mango, a non-gazetted border post.
The court heard that the pesticides had been smuggled from Zambia without proper documentation.
They were being transported in a Honda Fit motor vehicle, registration number LA 10111.
In passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda ordered Lazarus to pay the K2 million fine or, in default, serve one year in prison.
The court also ordered that the vehicle used in the offence be forfeited to the Government of Malawi and allocated to the Mchinji District Council Social Welfare Office.
