The Roads Authority (RA) has announced the temporary closure of the turn-off to Youth Drive on the Saulos Chilima Highway in Lilongwe following a series of serious road accidents at the junction.

The latest crash at the site claimed the lives of six people, including a child.

In a public notice issued today, RA said the closure will allow for the installation of traffic control measures aimed at improving road safety.

Among the planned interventions is the installation of traffic lights at the junction.

Motorists have been advised to continue using the straight sections of the highway and other alternative routes during the closure period.

RA noted that although the road has been operational for over 12 months, the recent accidents have been of high severity.

The authority said the incidents have prompted the need for detailed investigations and the implementation of appropriate safety measures.

RA added that it is also considering other options, including the construction of a roundabout or an overpass, and will update the public once a final decision is made.
