Police in Balaka have arrested a 22-year-old man, Richard Welemu, on suspicion of killing Yamikani Nandewe, also aged 22, after allegedly stabbing him in the neck with a broken glass bottle during a dispute over locally brewed alcohol.
The incident occurred on 25 December at Mbera Trading Centre, according to Balaka Police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha.
M’bumpha said Nandewe was drinking with friends at a local drinking spot when they bought a large bottle of kachasu (locally distilled spirit). Shortly afterwards, Welemu reportedly approached the group and asked for a share of the alcohol but was refused.
“The refusal angered Welemu, who picked up a glass bottle, broke it and stabbed Nandewe on the neck,” said M’bumpha.
Nandewe collapsed and was rushed to Mbera Health Centre while bleeding heavily, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, Welemu fled and went into hiding in a nearby village. However, members of the public alerted police to his whereabouts, leading to his arrest.
Police say investigations are continuing and the suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of murder.
