The deteriorating state of some roads in Malawi has drawn concern from several well-known musicians, who say the poor infrastructure is negatively affecting their work and economic activities.
This was evident over the weekend when popular musician Lawrence Khwisa, popularly known as Lulu, failed to honour a scheduled performance in Bvumbwe, Thyolo District, after his vehicle was damaged by potholes along the road.
According to Lulu, two tyres on his vehicle burst at the same time after hitting severe potholes, forcing him to cancel the show.
Posting on his social media page, Lulu apologised to his fans, saying:
“I would like to apologise to the people of Bvumbwe for not making it last night. We encountered potholes that caused two tyres to burst at the same time.”
Commenting on the issue, fellow musician Zeze Kingston, called on authorities to urgently address the poor condition of roads across the country.
“As a country, we should have taken responsibility and fixed roads like the KHWEKHWELELE–MANGOCHI road long ago,” said Zeze.
The complaints come amid growing public concern, with various groups urging government to prioritise the rehabilitation of roads that have deteriorated to alarming levels, citing their impact on transport, business, and public safety.
