A 32-year-old woman, identified as Saika Sabili, has drowned while attempting to cross the swollen Lipangati River in Makanjira, Mangochi District.
Makanjira Police spokesperson Mike Kamba said the incident occurred as the deceased was travelling from Nkopiti Village, where she stayed with her husband, to her home village to visit her parents.
Kamba said Sabili, who was an epileptic patient, suffered a seizure while crossing the river and slipped into the fast-flowing water.
Her lifeless body was later discovered by passers-by, who reported the matter to village authorities.
The authorities then alerted officers at the Lulanga Police Unit.
A postmortem examination conducted by medical personnel from Makanjira Health Centre established that death was due to hypoxia secondary to drowning.
