Nine people lost their lives in road accidents recorded during this year’s Christmas festive period, despite a reduction in fatal crashes compared to last year.

The Malawi Police Service says five fatal accidents were recorded between December 24 and 26, 2025.

This is a decrease from 11 fatal accidents and 13 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.

However, overall road accidents increased to 30 cases this year from 19 last year.

Police also recorded two serious accidents that left three people with severe injuries.

Minor accidents rose to 16, resulting in 36 slight injuries, while seven damage-only accidents were also reported.

By region, the Central Region recorded two fatal accidents with six deaths, the Northern Region had two fatal accidents and two deaths, and the Southern Region registered one fatal accident and one death.

Malawi Police Service Public Relations Officer Lael Chimtembo attributed most of the accidents to human factors such as speeding, reckless driving and fatigue, and urged road users to exercise caution as police continue enforcing traffic laws.
