Man Arrested in Karonga Over Murder of 63-Year-Old Woman

Police in Karonga District have arrested 43-year-old Cannan Mkandawire on suspicion of strangling a 63-year-old woman, Mirrium Mkandawire, at Edwin Village in the district.
Karonga Police spokesperson Margaret Msiska said that on the 19th of this month, a funeral was held in the village, during which some people accused the deceased of having arranged the death.
As a result, Mirrium Mkandawire was barred from attending the funeral following a dispute.
Msiska said that the following day, the woman was found dead in her house.
Police took the body to hospital, where a postmortem examination confirmed that she died due to asphyxiation.
Following investigations, police arrested Cannan Mkandawire and remanded him in custody.
The suspect hails from Vikalembeka Village under Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District and is expected to appear in court to answer a charge of murder, contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.
