The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has stepped up rescue and evacuation operations in Nkhotakota District following five consecutive days of heavy rainfall that triggered widespread flooding.
Nkhotakota District Council Spokesperson, Wongani Mkandawire, said the soldiers have been deployed to work alongside disaster response teams from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) to support emergency rescue efforts in the worst-hit areas.
He said the MDF’s involvement is aimed at reinforcing evacuation operations and ensuring that affected residents are safely relocated to designated evacuation camps.
Mkandawire said preliminary assessments indicate that about 30,000 people have been affected by the floods, while five people including a pregnant woman are still missing in Dwangwa, under the jurisdiction of Senior Chief Kanyenda.
