Eight Burundian Nationals Arrested for Illegal Entry in Chitipa

Police in Chitipa have arrested eight Burundian nationals for allegedly entering Malawi without valid permits at Kasisi Village in the area of Senior Chief Mwaulambya.
Chitipa Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Rabson Mkandawire said the arrests were made on January 5, 2026, during routine police operations in the area.
Mkandawire also confirmed the arrest of a Malawian national, 25-year-old John Mwamphamba from Kasisi Village, for allegedly harbouring the illegal immigrants.
The Burundian nationals have been identified as Idioni Nishime (28), Nick Safaniweni (22), Akizima Zahati (37), Makhangwa Alufisini (26), Ithatheka Levisi (21), Elitugabi Edezo (16), Baligalaza Salome (19), and a one-year-old girl.
Police say investigations are underway, and the suspects will appear in court once inquiries into the matter are completed.
