A 30-year-old man, identified as Asante Banda, has died in Nkhotakota District after reportedly becoming distressed over failed plans to travel to South Africa in search of employment.

Nkhotakota Deputy Police Spokesperson Chisomo Chuma said the incident occurred in Nimbula Village under Traditional Authority Kalimanjira.

According to Chuma, Banda had been planning to travel to South Africa for work and had successfully obtained a passport, which he left in the custody of his grandmother. He was reportedly waiting for his mother, who resides in Lilongwe, to assist with travel funds.

However, when his mother returned to Lilongwe, Banda later learned from his grandmother that the passport had been taken to Lilongwe by his mother. This reportedly led to a disagreement between Banda and his grandmother, during which he expressed distress.

Later that evening, at around 7:00 pm, relatives found Banda unresponsive in his room. He was pronounced dead, and police have said investigations are ongoing to establish all circumstances surrounding the death.
