Manchester United have sacked head coach Rúben Amorim, with former midfielder Darren Fletcher set to take charge on an interim basis for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.

The decision comes less than 24 hours after Amorim publicly hinted at strained relations with the club’s hierarchy, raising concerns about a lack of backing in the transfer market. Following United’s draw with Leeds, the Portuguese coach suggested he wanted to operate as a full manager rather than just a coach and indicated he would be prepared to leave once his contract expired.

In a statement, Manchester United confirmed that Amorim had “departed his role as head coach,” stressing that the decision was made solely by the club and was not mutual.

“With Manchester United currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that this is the right time to make a change,” the statement read. “This will give the team the best opportunity to achieve the highest possible league finish.”

Amorim leaves Old Trafford after managing 49 Premier League matches, recording 16 wins, 14 draws and 19 defeats, a win rate of 33 percent.

Despite his dismissal, Amorim remains under contract with Manchester United until June 2027, meaning the club will continue to honour the agreement unless he is appointed by another club.

The club thanked Amorim for his contribution and wished him well in his future career.
