A police officer based in Lilongwe has been hospitalised at Kamuzu Central Hospital after allegedly being assaulted by his wife following a domestic dispute.

According to police, the officer, identified as Inspector Simwaka, had just returned home from night duty which ran from the night of January 3 to the morning of January 4, 2026. He reportedly knocked off duty at around 07:00 hours and arrived home at about 08:00 hours.

Police say a disagreement arose between Inspector Simwaka and his wife, Benedetta Luhanga, after she questioned why he had arrived home late, stating that their daughter was supposed to be taken to school.

The officer allegedly explained that the delay was caused by his wife having taken away the car keys, a response which reportedly angered her.

During the argument, the suspect allegedly poured hot water from a bucket onto the officer while he was washing his police uniform, causing burns to his chest, left arm and left thigh.

Inspector Simwaka later reported the matter to Lilongwe Police Station and was admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where CID officers visited him as he continues to receive medical treatment.

Police say the suspect fled the scene to an unknown location, and investigations are underway. The case has been recorded as assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
