Three people are missing after a canoe capsized on the Shire River in the area of Traditional Authority Maseya in Chikwawa District.
Chikwawa Police spokesperson Dickson Matemba said the canoe was being operated by Gift Julius, 25, of Maide Village in the same area, and was carrying eight passengers at the time of the incident.
According to Matemba, the canoe had only travelled a short distance when water began seeping in, causing it to capsize moments later.
“Five people were rescued by well-wishers, while three others remain missing. Search and rescue operations are currently underway,” said Matemba.
Meanwhile, Chikwawa Police have issued a warning to the public against crossing the Shire River, citing rising water levels that pose a serious threat to life.
