The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has demanded transparency and accountability over Vice President Jane Ansah’s recent trip to the United Kingdom, citing conflicting official statements on the size of the delegation, costs, and funding.

In a statement issued on Monday, HRDC said the inconsistencies raise concerns about possible misuse of public resources and undermine public trust, especially at a time of austerity.

The statement, signed by HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa and National Coordinator Kelvin Chirwa, said Malawians have been presented with contradictory narratives that insult public intelligence.

According to the coalition, information from inside sources indicates that up to 15 people accompanied the Vice President in phases.

This contradicts Information Minister Shadreck Namalomba’s earlier statement that only five officials travelled at a cost of K168 million.

The rights body also noted that President Peter Mutharika later stated that the Vice President was using her own resources for the trip, further deepening the confusion.

HRDC has called on the government to fully disclose the delegation list, itemised costs, funding sources, and the legal authority under which any public funds were approved.

The coalition has also asked the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament to independently investigate the matter, warning of further civic and legal action if clarity is not provided, as Ansah has been in the UK on a private visit since December 26, 2026.
