Malawi social media was awash with reactions yesterday following reports that unknown thieves had stolen the iconic Mangochi Palm Forest signpost, which welcomes travellers into Mangochi Town.

The incident drew widespread attention online, forcing Mangochi District Council spokesperson Bishop Witmos to confirm that the structure had indeed been stolen during the night, a day before the matter went viral.

Witmos explained that the signpost was more than just a marker it played a key role in promoting Mangochi as a tourist destination. He noted that many visitors including celebrities frequently stopped at the spot to take photos as proof of their visit to the lakeshore district.

However, a new twist emerged today after photos began circulating on social media showing uniformed police officers holding the missing signpost, reportedly recovered from a forest where the thieves are suspected to have hidden it. In the images, several armed officers are seen posing with the signpost, sparking mixed reactions online.

While police are yet to issue an official statement on the recovery, social media has erupted with jokes, memes and commentary, with many users amused by what they are calling an “over-celebration” by officers after recovering what some describe as “just a mere signpost.”

Despite the online banter, the recovery has been welcomed by residents and tourism stakeholders, who say the sign is an important symbol of Mangochi’s identity and appeal.

As of now, it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the theft.
