Burkina Faso’s military government says it has thwarted a plot to assassinate President Ibrahim Traoré and destabilise the country.
Speaking on the development, Security Minister Mahamadou Sana said the alleged plot was masterminded by former leader Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, who was ousted by Captain Traoré in a 2022 military takeover.
Sana further claimed that the plot was financed from neighbouring Ivory Coast, though no evidence was publicly presented.
As of now, Ivory Coast has not commented on the allegations, and Damiba has also not issued a response.
Burkina Faso has witnessed several attempted coups since Captain Traoré took power, with the current government repeatedly accusing Ivory Coast of being linked to efforts aimed at undermining its leadership.
