Police at Jenda in Mzimba District have arrested two men for allegedly stealing 150 litres of diesel from the Mapanjira Unik Quarry construction site.
Jenda Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Prescious Mzunga confirmed the arrest in a telephone interview, saying the incident occurred on Sunday at around 8:30 pm.
Mzunga said the site supervisor, King George Mkandawire (52), was alerted by his Chinese employer, identified as Min, who reported seeing someone siphoning fuel from a vehicle at the site.
She said, “The police officers stationed at the camp responded quickly, pursuing the suspects and following their footprints to a house where they were found with three jerrycans containing diesel and four empty ones. The stolen items were recovered, and the suspects arrested.”
Mzunga identified the suspects as Donald Mshanga (20) and Mateyo Soko (19), both from Mapanjira Village in Traditional Authority Mzikubola.
She said the two will soon be taken to court to answer theft charges.
Mzunga also urged the public to stop stealing property meant for national development projects, saying such acts “hinder progress and incur unnecessary government expenses.”
