Police in Mchinji District have arrested 42-year-old Michael Tambala on suspicion of impersonating a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officer.

Mchinji District Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira said Tambala was allegedly posing as a security operative at the Mchinji entrance gate, claiming he had been deployed to protect the area from smuggling.

Mpinganjira said the suspect told police officers who approached him that he was a captain stationed at Kamuzu Barracks, but he failed to produce an official deployment letter or a military identification number.

Following the inconsistencies, police arrested Tambala and alerted MDF and other security officials, who later confirmed that he was not a member of the military.

Police said investigations are ongoing.

Tambala hails from the area of Traditional Authority Nkosi Kwataine in Ntcheu District.
