Unknown people have exhumed the grave of a person with albinism in the area of Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa District, police have confirmed.
Eastern Region Police spokesperson Esther Mkwanda said the grave belongs to the late Mausamatha Zacharia, who died in 2023 at the age of 44.
Mkwanda said the grave was dug to a depth of about three metres, raising fears that the perpetrators may have tampered with the remains.
She added that police officers from Dowa, together with health officials, have rushed to the scene to establish whether the body of the deceased was interfered with or any body parts were removed.
“The grave was tampered with by unknown people. Police and medical personnel are currently on the ground to verify the extent of the damage and whether the remains were affected,” said Mkwanda.
The incident comes just weeks after a child with albinism went missing in Richard Village under Traditional Authority Mthiramanja in Mulanje District, sparking renewed concern over the safety of persons with albinism in the country.
Police say investigations into both cases are ongoing and have appealed to the public to provide any information that may lead to the arrest of those responsible.
