The government, through the Office of the Attorney General, has entered into a Consent Order with Henry Mathanga, reinstating him as Deputy Governor for Economics and Regulations at the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) effective January 1, 2026.
The Consent Order, dated January 13, 2026, indicates that Mathanga was first appointed Deputy Governor on April 14, 2020, but resigned on March 26, 2021, citing “unfair and hostile treatment.” He subsequently filed a lawsuit against the RBM for constructive dismissal.
According to the Order, the parties engaged in discussions and negotiations regarding the claims and reached an amicable resolution.
The Order states in part:
“The Applicant be and is hereby reinstated as Deputy Governor Economics and Regulations (Grade 11) at the Reserve Bank of Malawi effective 1st January, 2026. The Applicant shall be treated as if he had never been dismissed and shall be entitled to recover any benefits lost during the period of unemployment.”
Mathanga’s reinstatement restores him to his former position and entitles him to recover all lost benefits during his absence from the bank.
