Police Officer, MTL Employee Arrested for Cable Theft in Mponela

Police in Mponela, Dowa District, have arrested two people, including a police officer, for allegedly stealing cable wire from Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL).

The suspects have been identified as Sub-Inspector Fortune Chikuta, an officer at Ntchisi Police Station, and William Mkanda, an MTL employee. They were arrested last night after allegedly stealing the cable from a shop in Mponela.

The Central Region police spokesperson, Esther Mkwanda, confirmed the incident, saying there were three suspects in total, but one fled after seeing police.

Mkwanda added that the two arrested suspects would appear in court soon, while police continue to search for the fugitive.

Sub-Inspector Chikuta, 40, is from Chikuta 2 Village in the Chilooko Chiefdom area of Ntchisi, while Mkanda, 55, hails from Chipeni Village in the Chadza Chiefdom area of Lilongwe District.
