Area 23 “Mastermind” Burglary Suspect Arrested in Lilongwe

kawale Police have apprehended an 18-year-old man suspected of being behind a wave of house break-ins and thefts across Area 23 and surrounding neighborhoods.

The suspect, identified as Lesitala Kamwendo, was arrested on January 15, 2026, following a series of complaints from residents in Area 23, Masambabise, and Tambalare who reported their homes being targeted by burglars.

Kawale Police Public Relations Officer, Precious Mabvuto Phiri, confirmed that detectives launched a targeted investigation after receiving multiple reports from victims.

“Our officers successfully identified and tracked down Kamwendo to his residence in Area 23. During the operation, several stolen items were recovered,” Phiri stated.

They found An HP laptop, a grinder,  a torch (suspected to be used during break-ins) and various clothing items

Phiri further revealed that Kamwendo is linked to at least three other pending cases of burglary and theft. Police are currently working to finalize these investigations and determine if the suspect was working alone or as part of a larger syndicate.

Kamwendo is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court as soon as the formal charges and paperwork are completed.

Police have urged residents in the affected areas to visit the station if they believe any of the recovered items might belong to them.
