Police at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) have arrested a man identified as Chisomo Malowa for being in possession of foreign currency without authorization and attempting to export the funds illegally.

KIA Police spokesperson, Sapulain Chitonde Lee, confirmed that Malowa was apprehended on Thursday morning after he was found with 8,100 South African Rands. The money was seized by authorities after the suspect failed to produce the required legal documentation allowing him to possess or travel with the foreign currency.

Malowa is expected to face two counts: illegal possession of foreign currency and attempting to export foreign currency without a permit, contrary to the Exchange Control Act.

Police have since reiterated the importance of following national laws regarding foreign exchange, reminding travelers that any foreign currency must be declared and supported by valid bank or exchange bureau documentation when entering or leaving the country.
