A three-year-old girl, Linda Phiri, died after being mauled by a hyena yesterday evening in Chikweyeye Village, a community of the Chisinga tribe located on the edge of Kasungu Forest.
According to Chisinga, the incident occurred when the child went to the fields with her pregnant mother and another woman.
“The hyena emerged from the forest while the women were farming. The other woman fled, while Linda’s mother, who is pregnant, struggled to protect her child. The hyena injured her stomach before seizing Linda and dragging her into the forest,” Chisinga said.
The tragic incident has left residents of Chikweyeye Village in shock and mourning.
Community leaders have called on authorities to strengthen wildlife control measures and improve safety for families living near Kasungu Forest, as concerns over human, wildlife conflict continue to grow in the area.
