Police in Mzuzu have arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly being in possession of an illegal firearm and four rounds of ammunition.
Mzuzu Police spokesperson Augustus Nkhwazi identified the suspect as Orman Kamanga of Chapongolera Village, Traditional Authority Kabunduli in Nkhata Bay District.
Nkhwazi said police acted on a tip-off from concerned members of the public who reported that Kamanga was threatening to shoot a relative following a land dispute. The suspect, who had recently returned from South Africa, initially claimed that the pistol in his possession was a toy.
However, a search of his residence led to the recovery of a Browning Hi-Power GP 35 pistol and four live rounds of ammunition. Police have since taken Kamanga into custody.
Authorities say the suspect will be taken to court soon, while investigations are underway to determine whether the firearm may have been used in other criminal activities.
