The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has warned that the recent fuel price hike could worsen the cost-of-living crisis for many Malawians.

The increase follows government’s decision to revert to the automatic fuel pricing mechanism.
In a statement released today, HRDC said that while efforts to stabilise fuel supply are welcome, the move raises serious economic and human rights concerns.

The coalition noted that the mechanism allows global fuel price increases to be passed directly on to consumers without adequate local safeguards.

According to HRDC, rising fuel costs trigger higher transport fares, food prices and the cost of basic services.

These increases, the group said, disproportionately affect low-income households and push them deeper into poverty.

HRDC has therefore urged government to introduce cushioning measures such as support for public transport users, small-scale traders and farmers.

The organisation stressed that while fuel availability is important, affordability is essential for protecting citizens’ welfare and achieving meaningful development.
