The Mwanza First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 29-year-old Yzonie Unyolo to 14 years in prison for sexually abusing his 9-year-old stepdaughter.

The court heard that the abuse occurred while the child’s mother was away in her village, and the suspect threatened the girl to keep her silent.

Medical tests confirmed that the child had been raped and was suffering from sexually transmitted infections.

Six witnesses testified to the abuse, supporting the prosecution’s case. Unyolo was convicted under Section 138(1) of the Constitution, which prohibits sexual activity with a child.

Magistrate Gladstone Chilundu said the sentence was intended to deter others from committing similar crimes and to protect children from abuse.

Yzonie Unyolo hails from Saiti Village, under Chief Ganya in Ntcheu District.
