Recent South African Returnee Arrested in Zomba For illegal Possessing Of Rifle And Hundreds Of Ammunition Rounds

Police in Zomba have arrested a 40-year-old man identified as Kafuse Mataya for being found in illegal possession of dangerous weapons. According to Patricia Sipiliano, spokesperson for Zomba police, community members around Lamusi village heard a gunshot from the direction of the suspect’s compound, which caused fear and panic among the villagers.

The incident prompted residents to report the matter to Kachulu Police Post. An investigation was immediately initiated by the Criminal Investigation Department, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Mataya, who was recently in South Africa, was found in possession of ten live 9 mm caliber ammunition rounds, three hundred and twenty blank ammunition rounds, an unknown rifle, and one pepper spray.

The suspect, Mataya, hails from Mbalame village in the Traditional Authority of Ramusi in Zomba. Police have commended the community for their alertness in reporting the suspicious activity, which assisted in the recovery of the illegal items.
