Malawi Immigration Service officers in Blantyre have arrested a 27-year-old man, Kelvin Mpinga, for allegedly impersonating immigration officials to defraud members of the public.
Immigration Service spokesperson Pasqually Zulu said that Mpinga has been collecting money from various people while falsely claiming he could assist them in obtaining visas.
Zulu has since appealed to the public to be vigilant and report all individuals masquerading as immigration officers and other scammers.
The Immigration Service has reiterated that all immigration services are processed through official offices and channels, warning the public against dealing with individuals who demand money privately.
Members of the public have been urged to verify the identity of officers and promptly report suspected fraud cases to the authorities.
