Police in Mponela, Dowa District, have arrested a 38-year-old man, Bonface Chande, who works for Premier Bet, on suspicion of embezzling K977,600 from the company to gamble.
Mponela Police Station spokesperson Macpaston Msadala said the incident occurred on January 20 this year at Chimwaza in the district.
Msadala explained that on the day of the incident, the shop manager went to inspect the outlet and found Chande on duty. Upon seeing his boss, Chande allegedly went outside and switched off the generator that was running, claiming it had broken down.
However, the manager checked the generator and found it to be in good working condition. Chande later left the shop and was followed to his house by the manager, who questioned him about the money collected during the two days he had been on duty.
According to police, Chande admitted that he had no money and confessed that he had used the funds to gamble. The matter was then reported to Mtengowanthenga Police, leading to his arrest.
Chande hails from Chabulika Village, under Traditional Authority Mlumbe, in Zomba District.
