Police in Mponela, Dowa, have arrested 38-year-old Bonface Chande, an employee of Premier Bet, for allegedly misappropriating K977,600 in company funds to fund his own gambling habits.
According to Mponela Police spokesperson Macpaston Msadala, the incident occurred on January 20 at the Chimwaza trading center. The matter came to light when Chande’s supervisor visited the shop for a routine inspection. Upon seeing his boss, Chande reportedly attempted to stall the inspection by stepping outside to switch off the generator and claiming it was faulty.
However, the supervisor inspected the generator and found it in perfect working condition. Suspicious of the behavior, the manager followed Chande to his house to demand an account of the sales made over the previous two days of work.
During the confrontation, Chande reportedly confessed that he had no money left, admitting that he had used the entire K977,600 in sales to place bets. The supervisor immediately reported the matter to the Mtengowanthenga Police Post.
Bonface Chande hails from Chabulika Village, under Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba District. He is expected to appear in court to answer charges related to the theft.
