Police in Zomba have detained 62-year-old Benson Likongwe for allegedly being found in possession of a wide variety of medical drugs without a permit.

According to Zomba Police Station publicist, Patricia Sipiliano, the arrest took place on January 21, 2026. Law enforcement officers acted on a tip-off suggesting that Likongwe was unlawfully keeping medical supplies at Nkalapa in the Sakata area within the district.

Following his arrest, police recovered an assortment of drugs, including: Indocid capsules, Paracetamol tablets, Chlorpheniramine capsules, Amoxicillin tablets, Albendazole tablets, Contraceptive injections and Bactrim tablets

Likongwe was unable to produce any legal documentation or permits authorizing him to possess or distribute the medication. He hails from Teputepu Village, under Traditional Authority Nkagula in Zomba.

The incident has sparked concern among local residents, with some suggesting that such illegal hoarding contributes to drug shortages in government hospitals. Police investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the medical supplies.
