Police in Ndirande have arrested a 30-year-old man, Fatsani Zakaliya, on suspicion that he was slaughtering and selling dog meat at some drinking joints in the Makata area.

Ndirande Police spokesperson Chibisa Mulimbika said officers received a report earlier today that the suspect was seen skinning a dead dog. When questioned about his actions, the suspect allegedly fled the scene.

Mulimbika said members of the public later apprehended Zakaliya after identifying him as a person who runs a roasted meat business at some drinking places in Makata, before handing him over to the police.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of selling unfit food, contrary to Sections 194 and 401 of the laws of Malawi.

Police have since warned the public against engaging in illegal and unhygienic food practices that put people’s health at risk.
