The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested Group Village Headman Khombera of Dowa District and five other individuals on suspicion of involvement in the exhumation of the grave of Mausamatha Zacharia, a person with albinism.

National Police Public Relations Officer Lael Chimtembo identified the other suspects as Tony Chawando Mwale (56), Msoloni Makuyira (48), Maliton Maguya (47), Lazalo Gideon (24), and Yakobe Chakhaza.

Chimtembo said Zacharia, who died in August 2023, had her grave allegedly exhumed on January 12 this year.

Police have since launched investigations into the matter as the suspects remain in custody.

The Malawi Police Service has reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, including persons with albinism, and warned that anyone found involved in such criminal acts will face the full force of the law.
