Police in Mangochi District have arrested two clerks working at a Makawa agricultural equipment sales centre and three other individuals on suspicion of extorting money from beneficiaries of the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP).
Mangochi District Police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi identified the suspects as John Kamwana (29), Yafeti Mwale (26), Eunice Moyo (60), Idrissah Richard (52), and Hassan Mzenda (39).
Daudi said the suspects were arrested on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the SFFRFM depot in Makawa.
She explained that police acted on complaints from concerned citizens who alleged that the suspects were demanding and receiving K20,000 from each beneficiary, above the government-set price.
“Upon receiving the complaint, police rushed to the scene and arrested the suspects after finding them in possession of K1.1 million, believed to have been fraudulently obtained from 55 beneficiaries of the FISP,” said Daudi.
After questioning, the suspects reportedly confessed to the offence and are expected to appear in court soon.
