A tragic road accident in Blantyre has claimed the life of a 46-year-old man and left another person fighting for their life after a minibus plunged into the M’bwelera River.
The deceased has been identified as Peter Stand, who was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident.
According to Blantyre Police deputy spokesperson, Doris Mwitha, the incident occurred while the minibus was traveling from the Namiwawa area toward Michiru. Upon reaching the M’bwelera bridge, the vehicle reportedly suffered a sudden brake failure. This caused the driver to lose control, leading the vehicle to veer off the bridge and crash into the river below.
Stand was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), but he was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Ishmail Jali, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
Police have once again reminded motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition, particularly checking braking systems before embarking on trips through hilly or bridged areas.
