All legal proceedings regarding the murder and robbery of well-known businessman Omar Mbeta in Chileka, Blantyre, have been officially moved to the High Court.
Beatrice Mikuwa, the police spokesperson for the South West Region, confirmed to Times 360 Malawi that the cases have been transferred from the Senior Resident Magistrate Court.
The Magistrate Court began hearing testimony from witnesses regarding the robbery charge on January 12. Initially, the murder charge was reserved for the High Court while the robbery was handled at the lower level. However, reports indicate that the complainants requested both charges be joined and heard together to ensure a streamlined judicial process.
The five men accused of the murder and the theft of cash and mobile phones from Mr. Mbeta are: Blessings Chadzamakono, Robert Assam, Douglas Sandram, Samson Kasambwe and Genisis Mastala
State Prosecutor Isaac Kadawayula recently informed the court that the state is prepared and ready to present three key witnesses to testify in the matter.
The late Omar Mbeta was a prominent businessman in the city, and his death in Chileka sparked significant public interest and concern over security.
