Police in Blantyre are keeping a 20-year-old woman, Charlotte Botha, from Mudi Village under Traditional Authority Kapeni, in custody on suspicion of engaging in illegal trade and commerce through electronic platforms.
Police allege that Botha deceived victims by falsely claiming she had been in sexual relationships with them and demanding money while threatening to leak the information.
Preliminary investigations into WhatsApp chats retrieved from her phone allegedly link her to fraudulent activities involving multiple individuals, including impersonation.
Blantyre Police Deputy Spokesperson Doris Mwitha said some of the alleged victims are believed to be influential people, but their identities have been withheld for privacy reasons.
Botha has appeared before court, where she denied the allegations.
The case has been adjourned to February 6 for hearing as investigations continue.
