Security has been tightened at Presscane Limited Ethanol Distillery Complex in Chikwawa ahead of planned vigils by disgruntled communities surrounding the plant.

Head of Security at Presscane, Chimwemwe Eliot, says no one is being allowed to enter the premises without thorough scrutiny as a precautionary measure.

Families from areas around Dyeratu are protesting against what they describe as poor waste disposal practices by the company, particularly the presence of vinasse ponds in communal land.

Centre for Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) executive director Sylvester Namiwa says the vigils will continue until an agreement is reached on the removal of the ponds and a compensation strategy for affected communities.
