Over 400 business owners from the Limbe Local Shop Owners Association marched to Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) offices in Blantyre to protest the upcoming Electronic Tax Invoicing System (EIS).

The demonstrators, carrying placards, demanded that the system should not apply to small businesses.

Association Secretary General Chisomo Rodgers said the system, which requires businesses to declare goods and operating capital, would threaten their livelihoods.

The EIS, set to be introduced on February 1, 2026, is a compliance tool for VAT, income tax, and other taxes, replacing the Electronics Fiscal Devices that only handled VAT.

MRA Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Gray Balawe said the commission will respond to the business owners soon.
