A 21-year-old man, Macdonald Makumba, is receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital after being injured in an explosion involving live ammunition.

Mangochi Police Station public relations officer Amina Tepani Daud said the incident occurred on February 8, 2026 at Mtalimanja Village in Mangochi Township.

Daudi said reports indicate that Makumba was at his shop when his 15-year-old male friend brought three rounds of ammunition allegedly picked from the Malombe area near the African Parks forest.

She said Makumba suspected the items were ammunition and attempted to confirm whether they were genuine by striking the primer of one round with a screwdriver.

“In the process, the ammunition exploded, causing injuries to his chest and left hand and he was immediately rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment,” said Daud.

Police recovered a 7.62mm cartridge at the scene.

Meanwhile, the teenage boy has been summoned for questioning as investigations continue to recover the remaining ammunition.
