Police in Thyolo District have taken into custody Cosmas Kathumba, a Form One student at Therekerani Community Day Secondary School (CDSS), for allegedly assaulting his grandmother to death.

According to Masambanjati Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Amos Banda, the incident occurred on Saturday at around 6:00 pm. Kathumba allegedly killed Eurita Zunguza, 89, of Namuonjeza Village in Traditional Authority Nsabwe, following accusations of witchcraft.

Banda said Kathumba had been unable to attend classes for several months due to illness and suspected the deceased of being responsible for his condition.

A postmortem examination revealed that Zunguza died from internal bleeding caused by the assaults.

Kathumba, 19, who hails from Mussa Village in Traditional Authority Nsabwe, is currently in police custody and will appear in court to answer a charge of murder.
