Police in Ntcheu are holding a 45-year-old man for allegedly murdering his mother following a dispute over a meal of cooked fresh maize.

The suspect, identified as Light Lester of Sande Village, Sub-Traditional Authority Mkutumula, reportedly attacked his mother on Monday afternoon, February 9, 2026.

Ntcheu Police Station deputy public relations officer, Constable Beatrice Mlauzi, confirmed the incident, stating that the tragedy was sparked by a disagreement over food.

“It is reported that the late Rose Mateyu, who was the mother of the suspect, cooked fresh maize for the family and ate with other house occupants while Lester was away,” Mlauzi said.

Upon his return, Lester discovered that the maize had been finished, which allegedly incensed him.

The court heard that a confrontation ensued between the mother and son. Unsatisfied with her explanation, Lester reportedly stabbed her on the left side of the rib cage.

The impact caused the victim to collapse and lose consciousness. Well-wishers rushed her to Kalimanjira Health Centre, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Lester is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of murder.
