Police in Thyolo have arrested a 54-year-old Health Surveillance Assistant, Enosi Biniweli Mathewe, for allegedly providing false information to the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to obtain a fraudulent death certificate.

Thyolo Police spokesperson Rebecca Kashoti said the suspect visited the NRB office on February 9, 2026 to process a death certificate for his mother and was issued forms to be verified by his Village Headman and church elders.

Suspicion arose when he returned the documents and submitted his aunt’s National Identity card instead of his mother’s, despite the aunt being alive. NRB officials detected the discrepancy and alerted police.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mathewe allegedly intended to use the certificate to claim funeral benefits from the United Civil Servants SACCO.

Mathewe, who comes from Ndalama Village under Traditional Authority Nchilamwela, remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon on charges of furnishing false information, contrary to Section 43 of the National Registration Act.
