Police in Mwanza have arrested two bus drivers, Haxter Chomba, 42, and Erick Gondwe, 41, for allegedly being found in possession of marijuana without a permit.
Mwanza Police Deputy Spokesperson Ritta Nyirongo said the arrest followed a tip-off from well-wishers that a bus entering the country from South Africa through the Mwanza Border Gate was carrying marijuana.
According to Nyirongo, police intercepted the bus and conducted a thorough search. During the operation, officers discovered two cloth bags hidden inside the fuel tank, containing 46 packets of marijuana.
“When questioned about the ownership of the bags, the suspects admitted that the items belonged to them,” said Nyirongo.
The two were subsequently arrested and are currently in police custody.
Chomba hails from Matiya Village, Nsomba Traditional Authority, in Blantyre District, while Gondwe comes from Mzakwata Village, under Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi District.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of marijuana without a permit.
