Public fear is mounting in the capital city following a terrifying attempted robbery at Biwi Puma Filling Station on Monday afternoon, captured in a viral CCTV clip that has left Malawians questioning the state of national security.
The footage, timestamped February 9, 2026, at 15:39 PM, shows a brazen daylight attack where two suspects one clad in a black t-shirt and jeans and wielding a handgun attempted to intercept a vehicle at the station.
In the 59-second clip, the driver of the targeted car manages to speed away just as the gunman reaches for the door handle. The suspects are then seen chasing the vehicle on foot before the footage cuts off. The video also captures the sheer terror of fuel attendants and bystanders, who are seen scrambling for cover as the reality of a Hollywood-style shootout unfolded in front of them.

The Biwi incident occurred just three days after the high-profile kidnapping of Sameer Sacranie, the 46-year-old Managing Director of Crossroads Hotel in the same city..
Sacranie was abducted on Friday 6 February by three assailants disguised in white robes who ambushed him at his office. In that incident, the criminals used a Toyota Fortuner with forged plates (KA 144455 and KK 10085) and fired shots into the air to deter rescuers.
The back-to-back occurrence of gun-related crimes in Lilongwe has sparked an outcry on social media, with netizens accusing the police of losing the battle against notorious criminals.
“Lilongwe is becoming a war zone. First it was Crossroads, now Biwi in broad daylight? Where are the police patrols?” questioned one concerned citizen on Facebook.
While the Malawi Police Service (MPS) issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the Sacranie kidnapping assuring the public that they have identified “persons of interest”, they are yet to officially comment on the Biwi Puma footage.
